Promoting diversity and inclusivity at the workplace is amongst one of the best ways to foster an open-minded workforce without prejudice on race, gender, age, religion and educational background.
Recognizing and honoring the world’s unique traditions and cultures, recently the Seychelles Revenue Commission (SRC) celebrated the beauty of differences, through its ‘Cultural Diversity Day’ organized as part of a series of activities dedicated to its employees for its 15th anniversary.
From sharing traditional dishes to wearing the countries cultural attire, in appreciation of the richness of the various cultures, employees also interpreted the diverse colors through storytelling, in addition to identify particularities of the countries tax and customs procedures.
The successful event aimed at boosting cross-cultural communication, also provided insights on how cultural perspective can influence productivity, creativity and further drive innovation at the workplace.
The activity also allowed employees to come out of their comfort zones by showcasing a sense of collaboration through team work, trust and unity.
Speaking about the one of a kind activity Ms. Sheryl Barra, Director for Taxpayers Education and Service Delivery said: “We are indeed very pleased with the efforts of all employees and the lengths they have gone through in making the cultural diversity day a success.
“Diversity can take many forms and to make all things work at the end of the day the most important investment you can make is for your people to feel the sense of belonging at their workplace through equality and effective communication.
“We believe that this activity, a first to be held by SRC, has been greatly appreciated and achieved its objective of building a good company culture through increased engagement of employees.”
A series of activities were also organized internally to mark the Commissions’ 15th anniversary including a paperless challenge whereby staff members within selected departments were not allowed to print or use any physical paper documents for a day, a staff forum featuring guest speakers from the World Customs Organization and the African Tax Administration Forum, an inter-departmental quiz and a knowledge transfer program providing staff from both the tax and customs field the opportunity to experience each other’s line of duty.
