Over the past months, the Seychelles Revenue Commission (SRC) has delivered a series of tax and customs education sessions to businesses upon request as part of its strategy to foster a culture of voluntary compliance in the Seychelles.
The sessions, tailored to the nature of the businesses specific activity, aims to enhance taxpayer engagement with the commission, increase positive tax morale and behavior from taxpayers, in addition to providing knowledge on the tax and customs procedures in place.
Facilitated by professionals from the SRC’s tax and customs education unit, the sessions covered topics such as the recent changes in tax and customs regulations, the various taxes administered by SRC, obligations of employees and employers towards income tax and exempt emoluments, the bonus schemes, as well as the rights businesses are granted under the revenue laws.
In part, the sessions also enlighten taxpayers on the services offered by SRC, the customs mandate and laws, procedures at seaport and airport, concessions on consignments upon importation, duties, levies and taxes applied by customs and temporary importation process, amongst others.
Companies who have benefited from the comprehensive tax and customs education thus far includes Creole Travel Services where a customized session was delivered on income tax and taxes within the tourism industry.
A dedicated session in partnership with the Department of Foreign Affairs to provide guidance on income tax and its procedures was also conducted for consulates and embassies based in Seychelles, whilst human resources and finance offices across the government ministries and agencies attended a specialized session on withholding tax.
Successful young business enthusiast of the entrepreneurship grant’s program administered by the Seychelles National Youth Council (SNYC) for the year 2025 also had the chance to attend a specialized tax and customs awareness session for business start-ups, after having successfully pitched their business initiative to the SNYC local grant committee.
Speaking about SRC’s educational plan, the Director for Taxpayer Education and Service Delivery, Ms. Sheryl Barra said: “Through a survey SRC conducted last year, we have gathered that the customized sessions are easier to deliver and much more comprehensible by the taxpayers. We have decided this year to continue our approach of providing customized tax and customs education to businesses, as the sessions though on a smaller scale, are more interactive, and the messaging is more far reach.
“Our aim is to provide increased guidance to taxpayers to ensure that best practices are adopted, applied and maintained timely and the laws are applied correctly.”
