DAs encouraged to impart tax and customs knowledge to the community

District administrators (DAs) in Seychelles, recently attended the Seychelles Revenue Commission (SRC) awareness workshop on tax and customs obligations for the year 2025, held at the National Museum of History conference room in Victoria on Friday 26 July.

Hosted in partnership with the Ministry of Local Government and Community Affairs, the half-day workshop focused on educating and equipping the DAs with the right information about tax and customs laws, also covered SRC procedures and processes.

The interactive session provided the DAs the chance to gather more clarity about changes in the laws administered by SRC, tax applicability and rates, the obligations of employees and employers towards income tax, the rights businesses are granted under the tax laws, Customs mandate, laws and procedures, amidst others.

Facilitated by SRC tax and customs officials, the workshop also provided the platform for further discussions about the informal sector within the community and how the DAs can better assist SRC in encouraging the individuals within their community to come forward in registering their business, thus ensuring compliance to the laws in place.

The Director for Taxpayer’s Education and Service Delivery at SRC, Ms. Sheryl Barra also a facilitator of the workshop said, “The last time SRC delivered the tax and customs session to the DAs was two years ago.

“Within that timeframe there has been changes in the laws administered by SRC and with certain procedures, especially with the formalities related to business tax return. Therefore, it was important that the DAs are kept abreast of these changes to better impart the knowledge to the community.

“We are very pleased with the turnout for this session including the level of engagement of the DAs who have also expressed the need to have these sessions at district level, to advocate for compliance enabling the business owners to meet their obligations timely and to also disseminate the right information within the community, in view that their offices receives regular queries about tax and customs procedures specifically for small home-based businesses.”

As it is part of its strategy to provide as much education about tax and customs to the nation at large, SRC will continue to host these educational workshops throughout the year.

Following the success of the second session with the DAs, the SRC wishes to expresses its gratitude to the Ministry of Local Government and Community Affairs for their continuous support and to DAs for their active participation. The DAs received a certificate of attendance at the end of the workshop as shared in the souvenir photo.
